This question doesn’t have a one-line answer. The normal oxygen saturation level at sea level is 95-100%. When you move towards a higher altitude, it goes down. When the oxygen level reaches 85-90%, it becomes a problem and leads to a condition called hypoxia.
- Below 85% leads to cognitive problems
- Below 65% causes mental impairment
- Below 55% there is consciousness loss leading to death
When to see a Doctor
Lower oxygen levels in the blood can lead to health consequences. The patient should be rushed to the hospital as soon as he is experiencing the following symptoms.
- Slight or no exertion leads to shortness of breath
- Abrupt awakening from sleep due to shortness of breath
- Tightness in chest
- Unable to breathe properly
- Oxygen level drops below 88%
- Noticing signs of cyanosis (hands, feet, lips or fingernails get blue color)
Preventive measures
Self-care suggestions can also help with hypoxemia and here is the list.
- Take prescribed medication
- Do routinely medical checkup
- Avoid second-hand smoking
- Quit smoking
- Practice deep breath exercising
- Do recommended exercise
- Eat/Drink healthy
- Stay in shape
- Avoid anxiety or panic attacks
Monitoring blood oxygen level
Oximetry is the best option to monitor your blood oxygen level. People with breathing issues should measure their oxygen percentage through the oximeter device. Moreover, it should also be noted that it’s normal for people having COPD or other lung issues to have oxygen level saturation around 88-92%.
